SAN ANTONIO (AP)Back in the U.S. with a gleaming bronze medal in hand, Becky Hammon said the controversy surrounding her decision to play basketball for Russia in Beijing has given her fresh perspective on life and humbled her.
She also said the medal, which she compared to a gigantic penny, was a bonus to a long personal journey.
This is the game and I think its important to keep perspective, said Hammon, back at practice with the WNBAs San Antonio Silver Stars on Tuesday. And if this is the toughest thing I have to face in life I think Ill have a very easy life. Theres bound to be more peaks and valleys along the way and but I think this has helped prepare me for those peaks and valleys that Ill face further in life.
Hammon, last seasons WNBA MVP runner-up, was essentially passed over for the U.S. team earlier this year. So the 31-year-old point guard, who plays for a Russian club team during the winter, became a naturalized Russian citizen.
The decision became a hot topic, with critics calling the South Dakota native a turncoat and supporters countering that she had a right to do whatever it took to play in the Olympics.
My goal in all this was never to get the approval of everybody, Hammon said. I think its very easy for a lot of people to sit back and say, I would have done this or I would have done that. I think if you went and asked people, a bunch of my peers, if theyd do the same thing, I think a lot of them would say yes.
Russia was eliminated by the U.S.which went on to win Olympic goldin the semifinals.
Hammon scored just three points in that loss, but she had a team-high 22 points in Russias 94-81 bronze-medal win over host China.
The medal will collect dust just like any other piece of hardware, Hammon said. s about the journey that youve gone on. For me the medal was nice, and like I said it was unbelievable just to be on that podium, but its been about the journey to get there.
Hammon said people asked her why, while playing for Russia, she still put her hand over her heart while The Star-Spangled Banner was played.
Well, people, because Im still American, Hammon said. I love my country, I love what we stand for. I dont know how many times I have to say that. People keep asking me that. I mean, Ill live the rest of my life here. And the fortunate thing for me is that I know where I came from and I know where Im going, which is, I think when you know that and you understand that you can pretty much take on anything.
Hammon singled out a couple of factors that she said made her decision to play for Russia garner so much attention. She said a lot of people wondered why she wasnt on the U.S. team in the first place.
I dont think anybody would have cared if I was the 12th player on the bench, Hammon said. I think a lot of people thought I deserved to be on USA Basketball.
Hammon is also from the U.S. heartlandpeople think Im apple pie and hot dogs and hamburgers and cheeseburgers on the Fourth of Julybut played for Americas one-time Cold War enemy.
But she said her situation is far from unique.
Our coaches go and coach over in other countries for the Olympics. Athletes go over to other countries. Other athletes from other countries come here and win medals for the United States, Hammon said. So I just dont think people were aware of that. So what better way to tell them than this little girl from South Dakota.
Hammon said not playing for the U.S. team is old news at this point. She said she harbors no hard feelings and that the U.S. deserved the gold.
Now its back to work in San Antonio. The Silver Stars went on the Olympic break sitting atop the Western Conference. The season resumes Thursday and each team has just a handful of games to go before the playoffs.
It was good to see my teammates and see my coaches. Theyve been absolutely 100 percent supportive, Hammon said. They were hitting me with e-mails and texts all the time when I was over there. For me those are the things that carried me through.

Q. Winning the Olympic gold with your sister, even though it's a different discipline, is that confidence that you can take into your singles game?
SERENA WILLIAMS: It's definitely confidence I can take, and I think I did from that because I was really returning and volleying well and I was doing a lot of the things well at the Olympics. I was really confident coming in here.

Q. What was the last match you played without any aches pains, when you felt 100%?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I felt great today. No aches and no pains. Yeah.

Q. How rare is that?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I mean every athlete plays with aches and pains. Every athlete, whether it's tennis or basketball. It's just something you grow and get used to. So you know, it's -- that's every athlete.


Q. With Sharapova out and Ivanovic struggling today, do you consider you and your sister favorites?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Well, to me it doesn't matter who's in the draw. I always come to a tournament trying to do my best and I never look at anyone else as like they're favorites to win. I just -- that's just not the way I think. And I don't think anyone else should think that way if they're in the tournament.

Q. In terms of how you're playing right now though...
SERENA WILLIAMS: I am just taking it one match at a time. Just happy to have this one over with.

Q. You seemed like you were ready today, everything worked great.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, in the first set I thought it was excellent.

Q. No playing into this one?
SERENA WILLIAMS: No. It's always good not to play into it. So hopefully I can keep that up.

Q. Do you still come into tournaments now the way you were coming into them in '99, 2000, 2001? You and your sister were very much dominant players; do you still feel the same way when you show up?
SERENA WILLIAMS: This tournament I'm feeling great. I'm just feeling confident and I feel like I'm just really, really, really enjoying myself. I love every moment out there. So it's good.

Q. How much does the fact that you're still, A, interested and, B, competing well in this sport have to do with your parents early approach to your career?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I don't know. I think the fact that I didn't play every week when I was six definitely helped out. I don't know if it's such a good idea for kids to be traveling the world. You get jaded and you miss out on things or you don't look forward to things that you should look forward to.
But it worked for me. I'm not saying it'll work for everyone else. I think it worked for me, and I enjoy the sport and I enjoy playing. I'm just having a whole new love for it.

Q. Did you feel particularly comfortable and confident with your serve today, in a pretty good rhythm?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, absolutely. I've been feeling good about my serve for a long time now. It's definitely one of my strongest shots, and today it was there again.

Q. Two points at the start of the match where you looked like you were totally out of the point, the lob and the passing shot. Take us through those shots and how you felt.
SERENA WILLIAMS: The lob, I was surprised I made it. I typically don't make forehand lobs, and I never practiced them in five years. I don't even know why I hit that shot.
I usually hit backhand lobs and I hit one at the Olympics in forehand and it was the worst lob in the world.
So that was just the wind I guess. And then the other winner was my forehand is really well on the run, so I was just expecting to hit that. I guessed the right place to go and I usually don't guess the right place. I did this time and I was...

Q. You've been fortunate to travel the world both on the tour and going to Africa and so forth. Having been at the Olympics and China, is there anything you learned about China from your experience there? Any sense of what that culture is like?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Well, I learned a lot about the culture. I thought they were extremely hard workers and an extremely nice culture and nice people. They seemed to go all out as a country and not just like individuals. Like they're all one instead of everyone being separate, and I thought the unity was really unique. It was amazing.

Q. Pretty different from the United States?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah. I mean, United States, you know, is filled with so many people that come here looking for opportunity, and that's what makes America great. It's the land of opportunity.

Q. Can you comment on the Serbian players now on the tour, how they seem to kind of start dominating?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Do you think they're going to start dominating on the tour?

Q. Well, they're 1 and 2 and 3 now.
SERENA WILLIAMS: 1 and 2. You think they'll be dominating?

Q. I'm asking you.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Okay. Well, I was asking you. (Laughter)

Q. I don't play on the tour.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Okay. I can't sit here and say someone is going to dominate when I'm still playing tennis. I think they're playing great, and, you know, I think there's a lot of depth in women's tennis right now.

Q. You said you have a whole new love for tennis. Where does that come from?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I don't know. I
just -- I don't know where it came from. I guess I just woke up and decided that I can't get enough of playing, so...

Q. When was that?
SERENA WILLIAMS: It was a while ago.

Q. You project on the court an air of just supreme self-confidence. Are you ever visited by self-doubt? Is that just part of your acting abilities that you're able to be confident despite it, or do you struggle with self-doubt like some mortals do?
SERENA WILLIAMS: No. I'm definitely mortal. And, yeah, I do struggle with self-doubt. Sometimes when I'm in a match I do get tight and I get nervous. You know, I think the difference with seeing some great players is they can work through that.
I always try to think of like, you know, current players that can work through that, like Nadal and Federer. I'll be like, okay, if they can do it I can do it too. So it takes me out of that moment.

Q. You had your first success here at the Open, and the last few years you've had a lot of success, more than Venus, on hard courts. It's been a while since you really made a run here. Why do you think that is?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I don't know because I keep losing matches I shouldn't lose. I think one year I lost -- I keep losing matches I shouldn't lose.

Q. Are you more worn out at this time of year? What do you think it is?
SERENA WILLIAMS: You know, I just make the wrong shots I think at the wrong time. One year I really ran into a lot of bad luck where I got the worst calls possible.

Honestly, I got -- I couldn't even hit a shot because I was so nervous they would call every ball out. That really wasn't my fault. I probably would have won that year, and I was gonna win that year. Unfortunately it didn't work out.

Q. Did you get a chuckle out of the fact that the lousy call you got here, many people consider that that was the one that led to Hawk-Eye?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I think it's true. Anyway, that was years ago.

Q. Do you have the sense that six years is too long since you've won this?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Absolutely. I didn't even remember holding up the trophy. I didn't even know I won this tournament, that's how long it's been.

Q. You mentioned before fighting through injury is part of every athlete's life. First of all, did you watch closely what Tiger Woods was able to do this year? Were you able to draw upon that at all and kind of liken it to your own struggles with injuries?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, man, that guy is really amazing. I never -- it's just good to see someone can win when they're injured. I mean I've won matches when I was injured. I don't know if I was injured to that point and to that extreme and to a Slam like that.
It was just an amazing feat. I think everyone can draw inspiration from that.

Q. Is that the mark of a great athlete, to stay on course and prevail under tough circumstances?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, I mean, his sport is a wee bit different. Maybe he's not running as much. Maybe, you know, it might be a little harder in tennis to be -- for a guy, five sets, for a woman, a three-set match, cutting and running. It's not the same sport.
But it'll be interesting.

Q. There are a couple of African-American teenagers, Sloane Stephens and Asia Muhammad, who competed in the US Open this year, players that grew up watching you and your sister, were inspired by you. Do you take pride in that?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah. I mean, that's -- I don't know. I feel like I'm so young. I don't know that -- I didn't know people could look up to me. That's kind of cool.

Over at Pitch Invasion theres a nice post by Richard Whittall acknowledging that ESPNs coverage of the Euros was, you know, actually pretty decent:
ESPN also offered live, uninterrupted coverage of every game from start to finish. No ads for Ford suddenly covering half the screen during the attacking build-up play, no giant banners appearing from nowhere to advertise some horrific sitcom to air later that night, no tape delay, and no presenter trying to serve as interpreter for an audience presumed not to know or care about the sport.
This coverage was somewhat startling to regular soccerheads like myself, used to watching Euro games, often with smooth, skilled British commentators.  As Whittall notes, part of the problem with usual World Cup coverage from the ESPN/ABC family has been the need to explain the sport to the uninitiated.  Dave Os never-ending up close and personal stories about the players, for example, were an attempt to give viewers a rooting interest in players they were presumed to have never heard of before.  The result was that serious American soccer fans felt like they were being talked down to at best.  At worst, they simply flipped over to Spanish language coverage in an attempt to avoid the annoying prattling of the announcers who seemed so clueless.  (Cue a dozen bigsoccer threads of complaints.)
Whittall, perhaps because hes a Canadian, thinks that a lot of the problem with previous coverage was all the nationalism involved as well:
This unnatural, flag-waving attempt to Americanize a game that already had a distinct national history (including a healthy, St. Louis-based league interest prior to 1930 and the Miracle on Grass in 1950) did nothing to preserve its autonomy or capture its unique American flavor. Viewers new to soccer were left with the image of a very slow hockey game played on a big grass rink, while Edward’s unrelenting patriotic exhortations underlined that the match was worth watching only to witness the USA beat the rest of the world at their own game.
Perhaps.  Certainly with no American team at Euro 2008, there was no rah-rah U-S-A style announcing to bother Whittall.  But, see, Im an American and a fan of the American team.  I dont mind an announcer whos biased towards the US.  And I fully expect that come World Cup 2010 Whittall will be disappointed because whoever is announcing the US games JP and Harksie, perhaps will favor the US again, if perhaps not in a way thats quite as easy to mock as Jack Edwards.  Thats because international soccer has become, at least in US sports culture, like the Olympics.  That, in fact, part of the charm to the casual American sports fan, the ones who dont really know the difference between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich but can easily grasp and enjoy Spain vs. Germany.  (Cue jokes about World War II or tapas!)  In an Olympic style environment, nationalism is going to be there when the US plays. 
What is improving, and I hope this will continue for the 2010 World Cup, is the willingness of ESPNs announcers to assume that viewers know a little bit about how the game is played.  The gradual infiltration of soccer into American sports culture means that some understanding of the game can be taken for granted.  A whole lot of todays sports fans played soccer when they were kids and now theyve seen some World Cup games.  What was noteworthy about Euro 2008 was the way it drew decent ratings with no US team involved at all.  The of international soccer means there is some appeal to games matching well-known teams even without the US. 
Finally, Whittall blames ESPNs broadcasting style for the US-Portugal game not being a bigger event in US sporting culture.  Maybe.  But I would remind him that a game being broadcast in the middle of the night, US time, is hardly likely to generate a mass audience, particularly for a game where the US was not expected to have much chance of victory.  I dont think ESPN helped but it wasnt the biggest reason, by any means.

He has been adjusting relatively well to New York, however, when the Jets signed Favre, they had to cut their long-time veteran quarterback, Chad Pennington. In Saturday's preseason game against the Jets, the Giants' Pro Bowl defensive end, Osi Umenyiora tore his lateral meniscus in his left knee and is now out for the season. This is very bad news for the Giants as their other Pro Bowl defensive end, Michael Strahan recently retired. There is buzz however on trying to get Strahan to come back for another season...stay tuned!

You need to improve all aspects of your games. I am going to put a lot of detail in my answer, because I really do like to help out.
Each day you need to pick out a specific part of the game you want to improve and focus almost completely on that skill. If you spend a little time on all aspects of the game, it will be a very slow improvement process.
Make a schedule of what you want to work on each day of the week ahead of time and a workout schedule of what you want to do during your workout.
EX: Week: Monday: Ball Handling, Tuesday: Shooting, Wednesday: Rebounding, Thurday: Conditioning/Defense, Friday: Strength
EX: Monday- 30 minutes of two ball dribbling (walk, jog, and sprint up and down the court simultaneously dribbling a basketball in each hand at the same time; this improves your awareness and strengthens your weaker hand because you have to work with both hands together. Be sure to incorporate crossing-over, switching hands, and going backwards or sideways with the basketballs to improve all parts of your game and make sure that you keep your eyes up at all time. Making mistakes is a great sign, if you arent making mistakes you arent going hard enough.
Tuesday: Do not simply shoot around- make a plan ahead of time. For example, flip the ball out to yourself (or have a passer pass you the ball if your with someone) and shoot 10 shots at a time from the corners, wings, and top of the keys. Make sure you work on shooting from one spot of the floor at a time (repetition is key). We drove to a theater about 35 miles away. Our local theater wasnt showing it at midnight. My sister has a Toureg. [You might remember that it was MY dream car first... but God, laughing, put me in a Tracker and my sister in a sweet VW Toureg. Sigh.] She me drive. Maddie, at 15, has her permit and normally would tackle anyone with keys for the chance to drive particularly on the highway which better suits her lead foot. (Its an inherited lead foot.) Maddie begged off on account of her leg being in spasms. She and her sister, Keegan, are in ballet camp all week. Ballet camp, by the way is more akin to time trials for [insert grueling sport of choice here]. At the end of the week the girls that are still able to stand on their toes get into the Company. The other girls, I presume, take their ability to stitch on ribbons to shoes to some sweatshop.
At the theater I realized that my ticket said It was 11:13. The rationale, my sister explained, was that it might be a packed theater and at first-come-first-serve seating we might end up with crummy seats. Oh. Yes. Falling asleep in a good seat would be much better. We joined a queue that was, predictably, all female. My sister kicked herself for not being as smart as the two girls wearing sweats and pajamma bottoms. They looked comfortable. Were dumb, we agreed. (On the other end of the spectrum was the trio that came in costume one in a dress as Lena, one as Bridget, one as Carmen. We arent sure what happened to the Tibby portrayer. Maybe she had a boyfriend and was, therefore, in the line on the opposite side of the lobby for Pineapple Express..?)
Occasionally a knot of men would infiltrate the Sisterhood line One pair was particularly amusing in that the boy in front barreled ahead in a man-like way of not wanting to ask for directions or notice his surroundings while his friend, lagging behind had the dawning suspicion that the werent in the right line all over his face. One boy actually belonged in the line he had a girlfriend. Id have felt sorry for him if he wasnt so obviously gay. He bore a striking resemblence to a young Jimmy Osmand. Lots of white teeth. He seemed more excited than the girl.
We finally got into the theater Maddies big purse opened and our snacks were distributed. Maddies purse is her schoolbag. Shes kept it with her on her all week. My theory is that there is a severed head in there but she insisted she was just trying to get used to having a schoolbag again. High school pressure does it never end? I had Twizzlers, by the way. And a ginormous tub of salty popcorn to share with Trish and Maddie. Keegan and her pal, Bryn, had large tubs of Coke Zero. (Bryn, by the way was so quiet Im not sure I even knew until the point that we were picking seats that she was even with us. I like Bryn. Out of all Keegans pals shes the nicest to me.)
Maddie and Keegan set up my new cell phone with T9. Supposedly it will make texting easier but since it took three of us 10 minutes to get the word typed in (and then with the function and not the T9) Im not so sure.
The theater filled up with females. Loud, chattering groups of females. Trisha and Terri arent kind to movie talkers. We shush them. So, as the movie started, our worst theater nightmare came true dozens and dozens of yakking girls saying things like, Oh my GAWD! and I love that dress shes wearing oh my GAWD its so cute! Sweet Moses. Shut the America Ferrera up!
The movie itself was better than the first one all of us agreed to that a nice little chicklet flick It would have been better without the laugh-track from an early 1980s sitcom (complete with gasps at the cute boys/ interjections of and , etc.) Trish gave bonus points to the audible sobs from the twits next to us. I cant remember why they were crying. Maybe our respectful theater behavior was distressing them?
My only beef and its my fault because I only read the first book. Maddie had it with her on a trip we all took a long time ago was that it ends with SPOILER ALERT the damned pants being lost. WHAT? Well, link arms, girls and sing Kum By Ya Lalala, We lost the pants HUH?
I guess that rules out a sequel.
